Constitution Day

Tuesday, Sep 16, 2025 at 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM - Arnold - CADE Room 219

Join the Legal Studies Institute for a discussion on Balancing Inclusivity and Free Exercise of Religion.

This year in Mahmoud v. Taylor, the United States Supreme Court reviewed a case involving public school curriculum in Montgomery County, Maryland. The plaintiffs, including parents of children enrolled in Montgomery County Public Schools, sought an injunction, arguing that the school board’s decision to remove parental notification and opt-out provisions for LGBTQ-inclusive materials and instruction violated their right to free exercise of religion under the First Amendment because the material is at odds with religious doctrine. At issue are five LGBTQ-inclusive storybooks and lessons in the language arts curriculum for grades K-5 chosen to advance the notion of promoting a fully inclusive environment for students. At issue in this case is the authority of school boards to include curriculum that reflects sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and the rights of parents under the freedom of religion.

Co-hosting the event, the Office of Student Services will provide prizes for attendees, a voter registration table and refreshments!
