MUC-901 COSR- Great Composers

Section Info: Omalley Senior Center | Scandinavian and Finnish Composers | This course presents the music of Scandinavian and Finnish composers including Edvard Grieg, Jean Sibelius, Aulis Sallinen, Einojohani Rautavaara, Carl Nielsen, Kari Tikka, Rued Langgaard, Kaija Saariaho, and others. The music of Iceland will also be included. Their works include concertos, orchestral music, and operas. Throughout the course there will be both audio and video presentations representing the finest works of these varied composers.

MUC-905 ONLN-Music Masterpiece

Section Info: Online | Music Masterpiece: Romantic Russians | This course explores the development of Russian music from its early lack of a national tradition to its emergence as a distinctive cultural force. Students will study the rise of native composition with Mikhail Glinka, the nationalist movement of the "Mighty Fistful," and the blending of folk elements with Romanticism. The course concludes with an examination of major Soviet-era influences and composers, including Shostakovich and emigre figures such as Rachmaninov and Stravinsky. | Note: Attendance in online class sessions Tuesdays from 9:00-11:00 a.m. is mandatory for section 201.

Section Info: Pascal Senior Center | Fundamentals of Ukulele | No Class May 25 | Learn ukulele fundamentals. Explore a brief history of the ukulele, fundamentals of basic music theory, forms of notation, chord chart reading, major scales and music history with related information of the basics of a variety of genres. All skill levels welcome; beginners are encouraged.

MUC-912 SCSC-Fundamentals of Guitar

Section Info: South County Senior Center | Fundamentals of Guitar | Learn the essentials of acoustic guitar playing, including how to strum and/or pluck with basic chord changes and how to play simple one-line melodies. Explore the history and evolution of the acoustic guitar, pick up common guitar terminology and slang, and have plenty of opportunities to ask questions as you build confidence and skill. No prior experience is required. Note: Students should bring their own playable guitar to each session.
