A Little More

Lonni Kyhos Summers has spent her entire legal career helping others access the law and navigate the legal system. This work continues at AACC, where she teaches in the Legal Studies Institute.

Beyond the classroom, she runs AACC’s Legal Self-Help Clinic, a student-led program that connects lawyers in the community with individuals who need legal assistance. Summers is also an Accessibility Fellow who ensures course materials are accessible to students.

Summers began teaching at AACC in 2023. She likes to keep her classes light and never misses an opportunity for a good laugh. Tying course topics to current events makes the content timely and relevant to students. She encourages her students to think critically and always ask “why?”

“AACC students do it all,” she said. “They’re incredible! So many are taking classes, working, caregiving and doing creative work like singing, songwriting and art. It amazes me how hardworking, driven and talented my students are!”

An avid reader, Summers says she reads “constantly.” Her love of books and reading serves her well as vice chair of the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s board of trustees and as a member of the Thurgood Marshall State Law Library’s governing board.

Her hobbies aren’t limited to books though. Summers spends lots of time outside.

“... I love to run, bike, hike, lift weights and work on my Pilates practice. Movement helps me clear my head. I truly believe movement is medicine.”
