Jean-Pierre Laurenceau grew up surrounded by linguistic and cultural diversity. He is Haitian and Ecuadorian-American and was raised in a household in which four languages were spoken. In the neighborhood where he grew up in Queens, N.Y., residents speak more than 175 languages. At one point in his life, he lived in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
His experiences have made him passionate about English language acquisition, cross-cultural counseling and culturally responsive interpreting. Since 2018 he has taught English language skills to adults. He says he is inspired by his students’ drive to become the best version of themselves. His role in their personal development is what he enjoys most about teaching.
Outside of teaching at AACC, Laurenceau serves as a professional community interpreter for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, where he facilitates conversations between educators and Spanish-speaking families in culturally relevant ways.
In his spare time, Laurenceau focuses on activities that keep his mind and body active. “Wellness and mindfulness activities are important aspects that keep me grounded with the right work-life balance,” he said.
