Sean J. Urbantke is the assistant professor of Theater for the Performing Arts department, teaching courses in the areas of theatrical design and technology, and co-advisor for the Theatre at AACC student organization. He received his Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design from the University of Maryland, College Park and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Texas Christian University. During his undergraduate work, he studied under professors Michael Skinner, Lalonnie Lehman and Nancy McCauley. At UMD, he studied the work and methods of, and professionally assisted, Daniel Conway and Misha Kachman as a graduate assistant. In his capacity as lead or assistant scenic designer, he has worked on over 70 productions in seven states from Texas to New York.
His designs have been featured in many regional theaters, including Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, the Capital Fringe Festival, Amphibian Stage Productions of Fort Worth, Texas, the Trinity Shakespeare Festival of Fort Worth, 1st Stage, No Rules Theatre Company, Performance Workshop Theatre, the August Wilson Center for African American Studies of Pittsburgh, African Continuum Theatre Company and Kids Who Care of Fort Worth, to name a few. He also has designed with several educational institutions including Huntington University in Indiana, Texas Christian University as an alumnus professional, Montgomery College of Silver Spring, Prince George's Community College, Carroll Community College and Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. He recently debuted in the world of commercial design with iStrategy Labs in Washington, D.C., by designing their set for MillerCoors, Inc.’s advertising campaign for Redd’s Apple Ale.
He is an active member of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Region 2 organization, and he takes accomplished students to the conference each January, hoping to pass on his passion he's picked up along the way.
