After graduating from high school in the 1990s, Audra Butler attended AACC. It was here that she met the first woman she’d ever known who went by “Doctor” as an academic title. As a first-generation college student, she hadn’t realized that she could earn a doctoral degree in an academic field.
Now, she holds a doctorate of her own and teaches courses in achieving college and career advancement, biology and education at AACC.
“I believe in the power of education,” she said. “It is the great equalizer in our society.”
In the classroom, Butler is known for caring about her students and finding ways to help them succeed. But she’s a stickler about one thing: attendance.
“Showing up is very important in life. If you show up, I can help you, even if you are struggling. I use the quote (by author Regina Brett), ‘Most of life is showing up. You do the best you can, which varies from day to day.'”
Butler loves working on a college campus filled with interesting and diverse people. She finds students’ creativity especially inspiring, whether she’s hearing their stories, viewing their artwork or sampling their culinary creations.
When she’s not at AACC, Butler is most likely spending time with her family. She’s been married for 20 years and loves to go on cruises with her husband and son. And with more than 30 cousins living locally, there’s never a shortage of fun family get-togethers. It’s no surprise that Butler, who describes herself as spiritual, has also found joy in bringing others together by officiating weddings.
