Sparsh Verma didn’t just pick AACC because it was close to home. She picked it because it felt like the right place to start figuring out her goals, her path and even herself. What started with a few college classes in high school quickly turned into something bigger.
Verma’s journey began with AACC’s Early College Access Program (ECAP), where she took courses while still attending high school. ECAP enabled her to ease into college. “It showed me how hard classes actually are and how much time I actually need to take,” she said. That head start gave her the confidence she needed.
Verma now majors in business administration and serves as the vice president of Public Relations for the Student Government Association (SGA). It’s a role that has transformed how she sees leadership and community.
“At my high school, I saw SGA as a résumé builder, so I had never joined clubs because I just felt like everybody was there just to get it on their résumé,” she said. “But over here, it really felt like a deeper connection to serving the community and becoming much closer community, which I find at every event and that’s the best part of it.”
For Verma, engagement isn’t optional. It’s essential. “Being engaged on campus is how you make friends, it’s how you make connections,” she said. “There are over 50 or 60 clubs that are active, and we have resources everywhere.”
Now she’s getting ready to head to the University of Maryland, but she’s taking more than just a transcript with her. Verma is leaving with confidence, leadership skills and a whole lot of experience. All it took was for her to jump in, get involved and make the most of her time at AACC.
