For the first time since 2020, AACC students, staff and President Dawn Lindsay traveled to Annapolis to meet with elected officials during Student Advocacy Day. More than 200 students from Maryland’s 16 community colleges shared their personal experiences with legislators to ask for equitable support for the community college segment of Maryland's public higher education.
The 12 AACC students included international students, first-generation students, veterans and students who simply value an affordable secondary education. They shared their personal stories about AACC's impact on their lives with 13 representatives from Anne Arundel County. Their testimony highlighted the impacts of legislative budgetary decisions and the college's value to the community.
Attending Student Advocacy Day was “an amazing opportunity,” said Mya Williams, one of the AACC students who attended.
Guest speakers during the kickoff event included MACC Executive Director Brad Phillips and Sens. Carozza, Elfreth and McCray. Sen. Elfreth strongly encouraged students to not just vote, but to actively participate in the legislative process just as she did when she was a student.
