Resident Teacher Program

In partnership with AACC, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) offers a Maryland-Approved Alternative Preparation Program for teacher licensure. This program is for outstanding individuals who do not currently have a professional teaching license but have a sincere desire to enter the education profession.

Program Overview

In this Resident Teacher (RT) program, you will pursue your teaching credentials through an intensive preparation program consisting of education courses, classroom visits and an internship. Coursework is delivered in different formats (face-to-face and hybrid), while the internship provides hands-on training in the teacher’s own classroom under the supervision of a mentor teacher.

License Areas

Upon successful completion of the program, RT educators will receive a Standard Professional License issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Available licensure areas include:

  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Elementary Education
  • English
  • Family Consumer Science
  • French
  • Language Arts – middle school
  • Math – middle school
  • Math – high school
  • Physical Education
  • Physics
  • Science – middle school
  • Spanish
  • Technology Education

Program Requirements

  • Basic Skills: Minimum 2.75 college GPA in undergraduate or graduate degree and passing scores on a Basic Skills Assessment (Praxis I, Praxis Core, SAT, ACT or GRE) OR a 3.0 GPA from your most recently earned degree
  • Content Area: Passing scores on Praxis II/Subject Assessment for the content area.

In-District Licensure Pathway

AACPS has launched Maryland’s first district-designed and district-led licensure program, the In-District Licensure Pathway. This innovative program supports AACPS' conditionally licensed teachers pursuing certification in secondary special education. Candidates receive mentoring, coaching and coursework while completing a three-year induction program. Upon demonstrating competency in InTASC standards and meeting all requirements, participants will earn their Maryland State Teaching License.
