In accordance with federal and state laws, students, faculty, staff, and members of the public with disabilities should be able to independently acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services as a person without a disability in an equally effective and equally integrated manner, with substantially equivalent ease of use.
Universal design is the concept that spaces, technologies, services, academic activities, and co-curricular activities should be created to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for modification. Technology that was originally designed for individuals with disabilities like resizing text, video captioning, speech-to-text dictation, touch screen devices, curb cuts in sidewalks, and many other innovations has become useful for everyone. Thus, improving accessibility for individuals with disabilities may enhance usability for all.
Making content and spaces accessible is an essential part of AACC’s culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging. Providing accessible ICT and facilities is the responsibility of all college faculty, staff, and administrators, including developing, procuring, implementing, and maintaining accessible electronic information and technology. AACC favors third-party web content and technology providers that meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) accessibility standards for their products and services.
