The African American Leadership Institute (AALI) at Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) works to develop highly qualified, diverse leaders and to provide targeted leadership development and much needed support for Black and African American faculty and staff. This group works to improve the retention rates for this population and increase the diversity of college leadership. This program is open to all AACC employees but particularly targets African American faculty and staff who are interested in promotion and progressively responsible leadership positions at AACC. Ideal candidates are in good standing at the college and are pursuing a future career in leadership.
Purpose
Through participation in the African American Leadership Institute, cohorts will gain the following key outcomes:
- Mastery of core leadership competencies, including strategic communication, change management, ethical decision-making and strategic planning
- Understanding of cultural competence and leading equity-centered initiatives that foster students success
- Practical experience designing and implementing large-scale projects aligned with college priorities
- Enhanced ability to build collaborative partnerships and lead diverse teams
- Personal growth in resilience, work-life balance and self-awareness
- Expanded professional networks of peers and senior leaders
Program Details
AALI Founder
Alycia Marshall, Ph.D., is the visionary behind AACC’s African American Leadership Institute, which she founded to cultivate and empower emerging Black leaders. Formerly the associate vice president for Learning and Academic Affairs at AACC, she now serves as interim president at the Community College of Philadelphia. With a doctorate in mathematics education from the University of Maryland, College Park, Marshall’s extensive career includes years of high school and college-level teaching and service as Mathematics department chair at AACC, where she oversaw up to 120 faculty and staff.
